One of the most common home electrical fixes is wiring a two-way light switch. This type of switch allows you to turn off and on a single light from two different locations. Whether you’re completely rewiring a room or just looking to add a new switch, here’s how to wire a two-way light switch.

First, you’ll need a few tools. Gather some flat head and Phillips head screwdrivers, a wire stripper, needle-nose pliers, and a voltage tester. Before starting your project, flip your breaker to OFF and double check it with the voltage tester to make sure there’s no power in the switch box.

Now you’re ready to start wiring. It’s important to remember that all electrical wiring comes from the power source. That means the black (hot) wire goes into one of the screws inside the switch box, and the white (neutral) wire from the power source should be connected to the other screw. After tightening those down, take the wires that will connect the two-way switch and strip the ends using the wire stripper.

Next, connect the bare copper wire to the ground screw in the switch box, which provides an extra layer of safety against electric shock. Then, attach the two-way switch to the switch box. The two-way switch will have three terminals – one at the top, one at the bottom, and one in the middle. Take the stripped end of the wire from the power source and connect it to the top terminal. Connect the wires for the load to the bottom terminal. And finally, connect both of these wires to the middle terminal.

Now you’re done! Test your two-way light switch by flipping the breaker on and turning on the switch. If it works, give yourself a pat on the back. With just a few steps, you’ve successfully wired a two-way light switch. While the process may seem intimidating, it’s actually surprisingly simple when you have the right tools and know-how.
